Can a novel spur an insurrection? That’s
what the cigar factory owners of Ybor
City feared. Although they were initially receptive to
the presence of lectors – men who entertained employees
by reading novels and newspapers aloud from the factory floor – they
eventually began to fear that the knowledge the lectors gave
their listeners was indeed, power. New Florida revisits
the history of the lectors with author and artist Dr.
Ferdie Pacheco.
In Homestead, Florida, a small airfield
lies hidden amidst sprawling suburban developments. There,
pilots who have lovingly restored their vintage
aircraft can find respite from the clutter and crush
of the city. For them, this airport tucked away in an avocado
grove is truly a “field of dreams.” New
Florida drops in.
By day, Rock is a typical 3 year old
Belgian Malinois puppy – happiest when he’s
running alongside his master or tugging on a rope toy.
But come nightfall, Rock goes to work for the Fort
Lauderdale Police Department and the word “fetch” takes
on a whole new meaning. Rock’s K-9 trainer
shows New Florida what
it takes to turn a canine into a crime fighter.
He’s known by one name: Wyland,
and one iconic image: the whale. These massive creatures
appear again and again in his “whaling walls,” – giant
murals that transform the sides of buildings into works of
art. New Florida finds
out what inspires the man behind these magnificent marine
life murals.
Take away the 2-and-a-quarter-mile-long
boardwalk running through it, and Corkscrew
Swamp would look very much the same as it did 500 years
ago. Still home to the largest stand of cypress trees in the
world, this swamp east of Naples is a virtual Eden for the
bears, otters, alligators and many other species that call
it home. New Florida tours
the 11,000 acre swamp for a glimpse back into Florida’s
unspoiled past.
